Most of our special events are open to the public. We focus on outings and activities that are educational in nature, and most are well-suited to families. We meet on the 3rd Friday of the month at Buehler Observatory on the Broward College Central Campus, from 8:00 - 10:00 pm, to view the night sky through telescopes provided by the school. Bowling at the AMF Bowling Lanes in Hollywood.
Co-sponosored with the CFI Community of Ft. Lauderdale, this year's event took place on September 14, and featured presentations by Bill Schoolman, the president of the Broward Chapter of the ACLU, and Phillip Hubbart, a retired appellate judge, public defender, law professor, and author of a book on the Fourth Amendment (search and seizure issues). Entering its third year, our Darwin Day celebrations, held in conjunction with the Center For Inquiry have been an enormous success. Designed to promote awareness of the life and work of Charles Darwin, the annual event showcases educational activities for people of all ages. We hope to see you in 2009, an exciting year that marks both the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth, and the 150th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of the Species.
Click the banner below for information on Darwin Day 2009! Our members visited Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens on September 21, 2008. The gardens were open free to the public, and it was the first time that many of our group had ever been down to the historic site on Old Culter Road. FLASH members attended the special exhibt Frogs: A Chorus of Colors at the Museum of Discovery and Science in Ft. Lauderdale on August 3, 2008. The exhibit featured 15 live frog habitats and 12 interactive stations that allowed visitors to experience the beauty of frogs and learn about their struggle to survive. FLASH had a special mission during the GWAR: Electile Dysfunction show at Revolution in Ft. Lauderdale on October 2, 2008: We were not only there to enjoy the show, but through the efforts of community liaison and North Miami meetup organizer Jay, we were able to have a Voter Registration signup booth at the show! Many people stopped by our table, most were registered, some were not. We had a great time mixing activism with fun.
Snake Day 2008 was held at the Miami Science Museum on August 17. Members who attended really got to interact with many different species of snakes, as well as view a 10 ft. king cobra, a yellow anaconda, and a black mamba. We also got to eak like a snake, sampling rabbit, cricket-chip cookies and a buggy party mix. |
